Couch Potato

So Miles was born almost 11 months ago. I figured it was time to start running again. I laughed when my friends told me about easing back in by following “Couch to 5k”. Couch?! I could run a 5k in my sleep! Right?

Uh, no. It kicked my tail. I’m so out of shape 😦 And then I come home and read on FB that my friend just ran the half marathon in Greer. Congrats Dave! I want to be like you 😉

Guess I’ve somehow turned into a couch potato.

Colin tells me yesterday, “So it looks like me and Anna Scott are going to get married”. Ack!!! What?!? This from my 6 year old who doesn’t like anything “girly”… When I asked him to explain he said “Well, we smile at each other and wink at lunch”. Oh okay. Is this how it starts?!

Eleven Miles

I have to brag on my boy Colin. He joined us for a bike ride this afternoon and biked for over 11 miles!!!! We then treated ourselves to pizza at Vespa. Yum!! Their new selections are fantastic. Short blog tonight. Need to get caught up on Jack Bauer and head to bed. I’m so proud of my boy!!

Perfect 10

I write about the weather often. I know I do but it’s hard not to when it is so glorious!! After a hard winter, (in our opinion, not that of my friends in the northeast) this week has been a perfect 10!! Daniel Island has never been prettier and we are all LOVING being outdoors.

Here are some photos of our bike ride with Miles this morning. Grammie and Poppy took the big boys to church this morning so it was pretty relaxed.

Here’s Miles in his new bike trailer. He was pretty cozy in there and fell asleep once we got going.

We biked to Bellinger Island: a little nature preserve in Codner’s Ferry Park. Here’s Miles on one of the docks enjoying the breeze in his face.

When Chad and I first moved to DI, we would spend a lot of time on Bellinger Island. We think it’s one of the “hidden treasures” of DI and are certain that there are residents here who don’t even know about it. There’s usually a rope swing on the tree in the photo below. Kids put it up every year and spend summers jumping into the creek from the top of the oak tree below!

Our flowers are putting on a show right now! I love all the colors. We are grilling out again tonight 🙂

The boys have been camped out on the lawn at Smythe Park watching the Blue Angels perform at the air show. The jets are WAY to fast for me to photograph so the shot below is courtesy of our friend Pat Stuckart.

My parents took Colin to this same air show in April of 2006. He was 2 and a half. Where does the time go?? Here are a couple of old photos from that show:

Yesterday’s Life Lesson

I’m sorry I haven’t been diligent with blogging lately. It has been a busy month! The Family Circle Cup has been so much fun this week that I haven’t found much time to get in front of a computer. But I learned something yesterday. Please bear with me because I’m typing this quickly and trying to share a bunch of thoughts that make sense in my mind but may not work out on paper!! 🙂

Yesterday was an awesome day. I knew I’d be working all weekend so it was jam-packed with “stuff”. We went to Charleston’s Cafe for breakfast and ate WAY more than I want to tell you! If you haven’t been there and you’re local you MUST go — it was such a treat! Our day was full of fun. We went downtown and walked the length of the waterfront. Then we went to the Charleston Beer Exchange (where Scott is sporting a new look ;)) to pick up their latest rare beer for our grill-out this weekend. After that we picked up our bikes (and bike trailer for Miles) at Trek in Mount Pleasant. Then off to the pool at the club for swimming and supper and then an evening bike ride with the whole family. It couldn’t have been a nicer day!

My point in outlining the whole day is that I learned an important lesson from an interaction we had with the boys in the evening. After all this fun, we get home and it is time for bed. Colin and Davis wanted to keep going even though it was late. They asked questions over and over: Can we watch a show? Can we play a game? Will you let us stay up for 10 more minutes? Can we ride our bikes some more?… I found myself becoming frustrated that they couldn’t be content with the really great day that we had. I said something like, “We did so many nice things with you today. I wish you could be content and satisfied with what a nice day it was.”

Later that night, it hit me that I do the exact same thing. Probably on a greater scale!! We have SO many blessings in our lives but I constantly find myself praying for more. More time, money, things, desires… I always want more. So I asked myself the same thing: Why can’t I be satisfied with all that God has done for our family? How come I’m always hoping/ wishing/ waiting for the next level of comfort, security, whatever…? How can my children behave any differently when their mother does the same thing?

I’m pretty lucky that my Heavenly Father doesn’t get frustrated at me like I did with my boys. Ah, it’s good to have a change in perspective. So, I’m back to praying for contentment 😉

Vacation Blues

I’m sleepy today. Not exhausted but just sleepy! Too much to do after being gone for a week. But… it was a truly awesome week and well worth it.

I don’t know how it happens but work seems to multiply when we’re away. Business work, housework, homework, tax-time work (I hope our patient accounting firm isn’t reading this!), and a myriad of other things that need to be done. I’m sleepy just thinking about it all!

But enough about that. Our time in the mountains was absolutely magical. I love it when we have no agenda and no schedules to keep. We can simply enjoy our time together.  Chad’s family has had a place in Highlands, NC since he was a little boy. It’s so much fun to see the boys experiencing things that Chad experienced with his brothers when he was little. Here are some of our photos:

We came home on Friday so that Chad could go to the Masters on Saturday. He had an awesome time and brought home some goodies for us! He got the big boys hats, a caddy bear for Miles, and a great little Masters pouch for me.

And yes, I know that Miles needs a haircut (and so does Davis). After a week of using a hairclip (much to the dismay of his daddy), I got Miles’s hair cut today. This is his THIRD hair cut and he is only 10 months old! He’ll love this photo when he’s in middle school:

As much as I love being on vacation, it’s always great to come home to a place that you love. The Family Circle Cup is in full swing this week and the weather is gorgeous.  I still think this is the most beautiful place on the east coast!

Hope to be back in the saddle tomorrow. I need a bunch of energy for the big week ahead but I’m so thankful for the little break from “real life” that we had last week. Glad that Colin’s spring break from Kindergarten turned into a fun family vacation!! 🙂
